Unter einem Chat versteht man eine Konversation zwischen mindestens zwei Menschen. Im Unterschied zu E-Mails ist das Chatten eine Form der Kommunikation, die in Echtzeit funktioniert und am ehesten mit einem Telefonat zu vergleichen ist. Urvater aller Chats im Internet ist der IRC (Internet Relay Chat).

Generell unterscheidet man hierbei zwischen zwei Arten des Chat, dem One2One- oder auch Privatchat und dem Chat in sogenannten Chatrooms. Chatrooms sind dabei mit dem CB-Funk vergleichbar, denn jeder der im selben Chatroom ist kann alles mitlesen.

Bei Singlebörsen ist mit einem Chat aber meist der Privatchat gemeint. Eine Ausnahme ist hier Flirt-Fever, die auch einen kostenlosen Groupchat/Chatroom anbieten.
